About Agod in Cheltenham

Array ( ) AGOD - Aboriginal Gallery of Dreamings Our History The Aboriginal Gallery of Dreamings (AGOD) was established in Melbourne in 1990 as one of the first Aboriginal art galleries, incorporating the original art collection of managing director, Hank Ebes. Located on Bourke Street, AGOD was an institution respected for its dedication to quality, its large variety of paintings, the close relationships fostered with its artists and enthusiasm and knowledge of Hank and his staff. The Cheltenham Gallery In 2008, AGOD moved from the city to an exciting new location in Cheltenham. This larger and improved gallery space has become the central hub of all current Aboriginal art projects.

In 1995, 300 carefully selected artworks from the gallery travelled the world as AGOD’s touring exhibition, “Nangara”. One of the largest works in the exhibition is by Emily Kame Kngwarreye, "My Country", measuring 15x5 metres and commissioned in 1996. This magnificent artwork now hangs on one of the feature walls of the gallery, after spending 12 years promoting Aboriginal art around the world.

The AGOD site in Cheltenham currently houses over 3, 000 paintings, from Aboriginal communities all over Australia, all of which are available for purchase. The works range from small and decorative to the top end masterpieces by world-renowned Aboriginal artists such as Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Clifford Possum, Barbara Weir and the four Pwerle Sisters.
